The pathway Part 2| awareness - gps location

In the first installment of our Pathway Blog series, we talked about the moment we realize we need to stop and ask for directions. This vulnerability-inducing decision to reflect, go question asking, and stimulate our thinking means admitting we may need a little help. That decision is of utmost importance if you want to raise awareness and get better as a coach. In this edition, we will discuss the result of that reflective introspection, raising our awareness.
Knowing we are lost is one thing; it is quite another to find out exactly where we are. Only then can we find our way home. The problem that often arises from this is there are so many different ways to get directions. We can use GPS, an actual map {remember those?}, or we could do the unthinkable and ask for help. This makes it hard to believe with so much technology and so many options that can geolocate us that we could ever get lost in the first place, but we do. All the time.
Now, let's put it in terms of your coaching path: think about all of the different outlets there are for us to find the answers to the problems we face in our coaching and teaching careers. DVDs, webinars, live clinics, virtual clinics, Google searches, YouTube videos, phone calls, text messages, message boards, friends, mentors, opposing coaches, watching games, even a blog post here and there {thanks for reading by the way}. With all the information out there, how is it possible we still get lost? Why do we still run into roadblocks even though we have the latest greatest "GPS" in coaching - that shiny new offense, the really great drills, that playbook you DMed for...Why can’t we find real solutions to our problem? When will we get on the right path, stay there, and even more importantly become so attuned to where we are that we become less dependent on all that "stuff" to find our way. Equipping ourselves with the skills to navigate our own way creates an empowered road to independence.
Once we have done this, we’ve found ourselves and where we are, we can begin to map out where we are going. We can draft our path home. Our awareness has been raised, and we can finally start to address the question: "are we there yet?"
